Jackie, I LOVE THIS!!! When I was in the classroom, myself and a few other teachers started a program similar to yours. We really just worked with male students who showed good leadership qualities, but were misusing them. Our weekly lessons dealt with many of the character traits you speak of as well as gave them jobs around the school such as monitoring the cleanliness of the restrooms, changing the marquee information, and they also put together a car wash that is really successful to raise money for our PTO each year. I would recommend looking into giving them responsibilities around the school to show to build a trust with the students. Great program and I wish I had thought of it! Good luck
ReplyDeleteJackie,
ReplyDeleteGreat concept. I wish there was a program that spiraled with the students through high school. Building a good character foundation is important. I am looking forward to watching your progress. I hope to get some ideas to incorporate on the high school level. I did not see anything that will allow the students to see some examples of bullying that are identified. Will this happen? Will there be any student reflection?
My coach always said that character is what you are when no one is looking and would tell us how to act when no one is looking. This is going to be a great research plan. Building character into students only allows success in the class, and out of the class. The first thought when I read your goal was, "This is what a teacher is". What I mean by that is not so much teaching academics but teaching young society how to be grown ups and how to be good people. Good job.
ReplyDeleteNicholas, thank you for the suggestion of the jobs around the school! Right now thestudents we have that would benefit the most from this are in a program started by the assistant principal and we take things one day at a time with them. I'll keep it in mind for next year though!
ReplyDeleteStevan, thanks for the questions!! Our students go to counseling weekly where they talk about bullying and preventing it. However, I do plan on covering more specific bullying incidents that apply to my children. I loved your question about student refelction, and I hadn't thought of it at that point, but I am now! I'm considering what would be the best way for them to reflect. They are a challenging group, and I hope I can find something they will do without complaint and that it will help them!! I agree with you about having a spiraling program all through school!! I think it would do wonderful things for our schools!!
Kody, thank you!! I feel the same way you do!! There is far more to being a teacher than just the academic side of things!! We see most of these darling far longer every day than their parents do, and we have to point them in the right direction!!
